We recognise that in order for children to succeed at school they need to acquire a core body
of knowledge. We aim to ensure that children will know the following computing knowledge
by the the end of Year 6.
Core Knowledge - GeographySpatial Sense (working with maps, globes and other geographers tools)By the end of Year 6 our children will:•Be able to locate places and features on a map.•Be able to locate countries on a world map.•Be able to locate countries and oceans on a globe•Be able to make comparisons between a map and an aerial photograph of the same place.•Know the different projections used by map makers (cartographers).•Know the major lines of longitude and latitude.•Know and be able to use the key features of a map e.g Title, Key, Scale Bar, Compass Rose.•Be able to identify different types of maps, e,g physical, political, contour maps, thematic maps.•Be able to measure distances using a scale bar.•Be able to use different types of charts and graphs to represent geographical data.•Be able to locate places on a map using 6 figure grid references.•Be able to create a map of their locality using Google My Maps.•know the eight points of the compass.Geographical Places (Place Knowledge)By the end of Year 6 our children will know:•The continents of the world•The countries of the UK.•The major cities of the UK.•At least 15 counties in the UK.•Most of the countries of Europe.•The capital cities of at least 10 European countries.•The name of the seas surrounding the UK.•The different regions of the UK.•About the land use patterns in the UK.•The oceans and seas of the world.•The major rivers of Europe, including the UK.•The major rivers of the world.•The key mountain ranges of the world, including the UK•The highest mountains in the UK, Europe and the World.•The different world climate zones.•The great deserts of the world.•The different time zones of the world.Geographical Places (Locational Knowledge)By the end of Year 6 our children will know:•About the land use patterns in the UK.•The key characteristics of the four countries of the UK.•The similarities and differences between the United Kingdom and a region in a European country.•The similarities and differences between the United Kingdom and a region a region within North or South America.•The location and distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water.•The different seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United KingdomGeographical Terms and FeaturesBy the end of Year 6 our children will know the following terms and geographical features:•beach•cliff •coast•strait•peninsula•bay•forest•hill•mountain•peak•sea•ocean•island•river
